The first round of the 2020 NFL Draft completed. Shane Carder gives out his annual grades. Did you favorite team pass the test?
In what was one of the most vanilla drafts I’ve seen there were only a few picks that threw me for a loop, most teams picked for need, some picked the best available, and some picked for 5 years in the future — Green Bay I’m looking at you– so here are my thoughts and rankings; from round 1 of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Arizona Cardinals – A
Isaiah Simmons, LB (Clemson)
I’m just as shocked as everyone else that LB Isiah Simmons fell to 8, I had him going 4 or 7, unreal talent to play every defensive position, will be a big asset to the Cards D-core.
Atlanta Falcons – B
A.J. Terrell, CB (Clemson)
Drafting for need, makes sense adding a CB, they were probably hoping to land Henderson, but I have no doubt that A.J Terrell will do what they need him to do.
Baltimore Ravens – A
Patrick Queen, LB (LSU)
Talk about getting a gem at the end of the round, Baltimore has a successful record with drafting defense and it continues with Patrick Queen, solid build LB with fit in perfectly with the dominating Ravens defense, not many holes on this team.
Carolina Panthers – B-
Derrick Brown, DT (Auburn)
I thought Simmons was the pick here, but Carolina kept it defensively and took DT Derrick Brown at 7 to bolster the defense after investing the Offence earlier this year.
Cincinnati Bengals – B
Joe Burrow, QB (LSU)
I’m probably the only person not sold on QB Joe Burrow, but this was a pick the Bengals had to make– now, they’ll need to get him some help if they expect him to be the future.
Cleveland Browns – B
Jedrick Wills, T (Alabama)
A nice safety blanking pick to help Baker in the pocket, OL Jedrick Willis should make an immediate impact for the browns front 5.
Dallas Cowboys – C+
CeeDee Lamb, WR (Oklahoma)
Thinking WR CeeDee Lamb would be off the board by this pick surprises me more than the pick itself. Dallas keeps investing in the offense, yet haven’t invested in their QB. Lamb will be a great weapon if he has someone throwing to him.
Denver Broncos – B+
Jerry Jeudy, WR (Alabama)
I think everyone expected the Broncos to go WR, but I don’t think they expected it to be WR Jerry Jeudy. I think he is a great piece for Drew Lock to work with.
Detroit Lions – B
Jeffrey Okudah, CB (Ohio State)
Lions filling a need immediately after trading away their cornerstone CB. With the addition of Trufant in free agency, CB Jeff Okudah with the No. 3 pick should help sure of the DBs
Green Bay Packers – Absolute F
Jordan Love, QB (Utah State)
Aaron Rodgers has 4 years left on his contract. That’s my ranking, oh yeah and the pick was QB Jordan Love.
Jacksonville Jaguars – B
C.J. Henderson, CB (Florida)
K’Lavon Chaisson, DE (LSU)
9th and 20th Pick
Jags we’re a defensive nightmare for a few seasons and it seems their trending back that way using both their 1st round picks on defensive help with CB CJ Henderson at 9 and LB K’Lavon Chaisson at 20,
Kansas City Chiefs – C
Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB (LSU)
Chiefs decided taking an RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire at the end of the 1st round was the move, but surprisingly it was not Swift or Taylor, this pick should help Mahomes in the backfield, but I think useful RBs will be a dime a dozen soon enough.
Los Angeles Chargers – A
Justin Herbert, QB (Oregon)
Kenneth Murray, LB (Oklahoma)
6th and 23rd Pick
No one knew for a fact which QB would go at 5. I believe the Chargers got the steal here getting Herbert at 6, big frame and athletic, give him time to learn the build and I think LA will have the QB of its future.
In an unexpected move LA traded up back into the first round with the Patriots, and they selected LB Kenneth Murray, who paired with Bosa and Ingram will add to an already scary defense
Miami Dolphins – A+
Tua Tagovailoa, QB (Alabama)
Austin Jackson, T (USC)
Noah Igbinoghene, CB (Auburn)
5th, 18th and 30th
The Dolphins have had a perfect 1st round in my opinion, filled the need of an elite QB of the future with Tua Tagovailoa at 5, protection for him at 18 in OL Austin Jackson, then rounding it out with some defensive help at 30th with CB Noah Igbinoghene
Minnesota Vikings – A
Justin Jefferson, WR (LSU)
Jeff Gladney, CB (TCU)
22nd and 31st Pick
This draft couldn’t have worked out better for the SKOL, adding WR Justin Jefferson after he fell to 22nd to replace the recently traded Stefon Diggs, and rounding it out with CB Jeff Gladney to replace Xavier Rhodes.
New Orleans Saints – D
Cesar Ruiz, C (Michigan)
D for: Definitely not the direction I saw the Saints going. I feel like this was a reaction pick to Carolina drafting Derrick Brown, bringing in C Cesar Ruiz to add some more protection for the aging Drew Brees
New York Giants – C+
Andrew Thomas, T (Georgia)
This should have been Simmons, but I understand the pick from a “protect the QB” standpoint, OT Andrew Thomas at 4 is still a bit of a stretch.
New York Jets – B
Mekhi Becton, T (Louisville)
Picking up OT Mekhi Becton at 11 was the right move, hoping Darnold is around all season he will need solid protection.
Las Vegas Raiders – B-
Henry Ruggs, WR (Alabama)
Damon Arnette, CB (Ohio State)
12th and 19th Pick
Raiders typically baffle me with their pick process, and they continue, Las Vegas goes with Henry Ruggs III at 12, who was the fastest player at the combine, Raiders love drafting speed, but they slow it down with their second pick in the 1st round taking OL Damon Arnette, definitely aiming to help Derek Carr as much as they can this year.
Philadelphia Eagles – D
Jalen Reagor, WR (TCU)
With Jefferson still on the board, I thought this was a sure-fire pick. But the Eagles decided Jalen Reagor was their guy, so unless they know something I don’t, this pick doesn’t add up.
San Francisco 49ers – A-
Javon Kinlaw, DT (South Carolina)
Brandon Aiyuk, WR (ASU)
14th and 25th Pick
As the theme for a lot of teams this draft, the goal was to replace players. Grabbing DT Javon Kinlaw at 14 allows the 49ers to slide him into Buckner’s spot while also adding another weapon for Jimmy G with WR Brandon Aiyuk at 25
Seattle Seahawks – B
Jordyn Brooks, LB (Texas Tech)
If there’s something Pete Carroll loves, it’s LB who are tackling machines, so taking ILB Jordyn Brooks at 27 is just a smart move from a Pete Carroll standpoint.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers – A
Tristan Wirfs, T (Iowa)
Somehow the Bucs keep making all the right moves this offseason, adding protection for Brady, and trading up to do so was a great move on their part, getting Tristan Wirfs to bolster the OL
Tennessee Titans – B
Isaiah Wilson, T (Georgia)
With Derrick Henry as your main point of offense adding some run blocking up front was a good move from the Titans taking OT Isaiah Wilson at 29 to try and sure up the OL
Washington Redskins – A+
Chase Young, DE (Ohio State)
This pick was as easy as it gets, Chase Young was undoubtedly the best player overall in the draft, adding a defensive asset to build around is always key, we’ll have to see if they fill some offensive holes on day 2.
